Chiappa's SA 1873 Black Thunder is a single-action revolver built on the classic 1873 pattern, chambered in .44 Magnum with a 5.5-inch barrel. It's aimed squarely at shooters who want a full-power .44 Mag single-action without paying Ruger Redhawk or Freedom Arms money — a price bracket that's historically been thin on double-action-free options.

What Makes It Different

The interesting part isn't the action type — single-action .44 Mags have existed since the Blackhawk — it's where Chiappa has positioned the Black Thunder on price. Exit velocity: 1,147 fps (impact 1,177 fps). Residual energy after the drywall: 687 ft·lbs of the 738 ft·lbs it arrived with — the barrier absorbed just 6.9%. A single sheet of gypsum is essentially transparent to a full-power magnum revolver load.

As with any hollow point through drywall, the round does not expand: gypsum packs the cavity and the bullet exits near-intact at 98% mass retention. Whatever is behind that wall meets a 240-grain projectile still carrying more energy than most 9mm loads produce at the muzzle.

How It Compares

Against the Ruger Redhawk — the reference point for mid-priced .44 Mag single-actions — the Black Thunder trades some fit-and-finish and long-term durability reputation for a materially lower price.
