FN ARKA STD — SCAR Internals on an AR-15 Lower
The FN ARKA STD is FN Herstal's semi-automatic rifle chambered in 5.56×45mm NATO, built around the short-stroke gas piston system FN developed for the SCAR platform — but housed in a receiver set that accepts the standard AR-15 magazine and lower pattern.
What Makes It Different
Most AR-15-pattern rifles run direct impingement: gas is bled from the barrel straight into the bolt carrier, which cycles the action but also dumps carbon and heat directly into the receiver. FN's short-stroke piston, proven on the SCAR since the mid-2000s, taps gas into a separate piston that pushes an operating rod a short distance to cycle the bolt carrier — the gas itself never enters the action. That keeps the bolt carrier group cleaner and running cooler over a high round count, at the cost of a small amount of added reciprocating mass and complexity versus direct impingement.
Putting that system on a receiver compatible with the AR-15's magazine and lower pattern is the notable part — it lets the ARKA STD draw on the AR-15's enormous aftermarket for lowers, grips, and stocks while keeping FN's piston operating system, rather than requiring a proprietary magazine or receiver set the way the SCAR does.
Penetration Test
We ran standard 5.56 ball ammunition — 62gr FMJ at roughly 3,020 fps — through the BallisticEngine drywall barrier model. The operating system doesn't change terminal ballistics, but it's the baseline reference load for this caliber class.

Exit velocity: 2,945 fps (impact 3,009 fps). Residual energy after the drywall: 1,170 ft·lbs of the 1,246 ft·lbs it arrived with — the barrier absorbed only 6.1%, the lowest fraction of the three loads we ran this month.
That is the honest picture for rifle ammunition indoors: a single gypsum sheet costs a 5.56 round about 64 fps. The energy still on the far side exceeds the muzzle energy of most defensive handgun loads, which is why barrier discipline matters far more with a rifle than with a pistol.
How It Compares
Against a direct-impingement AR-15 running the same 5.56 loads, terminal performance downrange is effectively identical — the piston system changes how the rifle cycles and how dirty the action runs, not what the bullet does on the other side of a barrier. The ARKA STD's pitch is reliability and cleanliness under sustained fire, not a different penetration profile.
